16 ATLAS road-rail excavators 1604 ZW of the new series have been bought by DB Bahnbau Gruppe GmbH and are in use on Deutsche Bahn AG routes. The new machines of the 2020 series represent a real leap in quality. Through intensive exchange with practice, a number of application-oriented aspects were further developed, which have raised the ATLAS road-rail excavators to a new, higher level. The new model has received all the necessary approvals from EBA / DB Netz AG. The DB Bahnbau Gruppe GmbH is a subsidiary of the Deutsche Bahn AG and provides nationwide construction work for the railway infrastructure of the DB AG.
Unique – tail radius variants of less than 2 m possible
The ATLAS 1604 ZW is available in two different tail radius variants: 2,000 mm and 1,750 mm. The ATLAS 1404 ZW model is even available with a rear radius of 1,575 mm. They make the ATLAS ZW excavators into extremely versatile work machines. The counterweight is integrated and thus the ATLAS becomes a real short-tail excavator. A low center of gravity and a transversely installed motor ensure optimal stability and stability when working on the track. The chassis with robust, specially designed excavator axles with planetary gears in all 4 wheel hubs as well as all-wheel drive, variable speed drive motor with powershift transmission and a double-acting travel brake valve are the prerequisites for safe travel on the rails. The newly designed rigid axle now has a switchable, 100% limited-slip differential. In addition, the track wheel axle is equipped with robust, easy to assemble and dismantle locks, which ensure further stability on the track and can be used as an option.
Emissions standard Euro V
The new Deutz engines with 115 KW / 157 PS meet the emission standards of EU Stage V / US EPA. They are quiet with 97 dB (A) outside and 71 dB (A) inside and are equipped with an exhaust aftertreatment system with a closed diesel particle filter and combined SCR catalytic converter. The road-rail excavators are equipped with Linde’s proven load-sensing hydraulics. The intelligent ATLAS hydraulic management AWE 4 enables a load-independent superimposition of the work movements.
Security in every detail
When the end point is reached, the computer-aided slewing limitation reduces the superstructure speed proportionally and then switches off the superstructure slewing gear. The electronic lift height limiter (excavator boom) also works in such a way that any damage to signal systems, noise barriers, contact lines, etc. can be excluded. The maximum handle height and the swivel range of the work tool in relation to the calculation point are taken into account. Very important: the system recognizes when an attachment is mounted and adjusts the programmed working height accordingly. The movement stops when the programmed end point is reached. The load torque limitation according to DIN EN 15746-2 is also integrated.
The driver’s living room
In the double cabin you feel like you are on a lighthouse, the view is so good. The rear area is monitored with a camera and display. The Actimo Evolution super seat from Grammer allows so many individual adjustment nuances that you really relieve your back with its support. The new controls are also a pleasant highlight for the driver. They have been adapted so that they have the necessary robustness for tough construction site use and at the same time are more convenient to reach. The standard air conditioning makes the living room perfect.
Fully hydraulic quick coupler for 16 different work tools
Since the ATLAS road-rail excavators are mainly used to repair the more than 33,000 km of Deutsche Bahn AG rail line, they are also geared towards this work. This includes switch and track repairs, sleeper and rail changes, construction and maintenance of signal and contact wire systems, noise barriers, railway operations buildings and others. Most of the work is carried out with hydraulic attachments. This includes, among other things. about sleeper compartment grabs, freely rotating load hooks, hydraulic hammers, vibration plates, pile-driving and pulling vibrators, as well as sleeper changers, tamping units and rail crackers. A total of 16 different attachments are used. For this purpose, a special, fully hydraulic quick-change system was developed in close cooperation between the producers and the DB Bahnbau Gruppe GmbH with the OilQuick-Rail. It has four more connections than usual. All in all, after several months of use in practice, it can now be said that the ATLAS road-rail excavator of the type 1604 ZW has actually been a very good step in further development.
